Top 10 tips - riding

This section is designed to help you avoid some of the pitfalls which could put you off when returning to riding:-

  • Prepare before you ride. For some of us, a huge part of the fun is the GEAR, but remember, you have to pedal everything you have on the bike.
  • Make sure your bike is ready. Tyres need to be at the correct pressure, this makes a massive difference, if you are on the roads and it's mostly dry, get those tyres to their maximum. Look at the recommended tyre pressures on the side of the tyre wall. Check your brakes and lights before you set off.
  • Eat and drink in advance of setting off. Remember, what goes in is very related to what comes out in pedal power. Carry plenty of water and don't run out.
  • Wear a Helmet. We also recommend cycling shades which come with interchangeable lenses. These keep stones and flies out of your eyes.
  • Plan your route. Especially when new/returning to cycling, don't put yourself off; 10 miles is a long way. Use your gears on those hills, you can't change down too soon on a hill when new to riding. Try to avoid very busy main roads, it can be very off putting initially.
  • Try and get a friend to commit to coming with you. Cycling is a very sociable past time, but if one of you commits, you usually go. If you decide to always ride alone, the effort involved in getting ready is usually too big a HILL TO CLIMB!!!!
  • Watch the weather forecast. It's not that bad riding in the bad weather, some of us ride all winter. But you need the correct clothing. It can get very cold in the wind especially if you are wet.
  • Always carry a spare inner tube and tyre levers. Make sure you know how to fit them - we are more than happy to show you.
  • Be sensible when on the road. Don't ride two-a-breast and always do all you can to let cars past. If loads of cars have had difficulty passing you on a narrow road, don't slip up the inside of them at the traffic lights, you will only annoy them when they have to get past you again. WATCH THEM, THEY CAN'T EVEN SEE YOU.
  • Live - Ride - Enjoy!!!!
